NETGEAR Nighthawk R6900P AC1900 Dual-Band WiFi Router
The R6900P is difficult to recommend as a new primary Internet router. NETGEAR marks it end-of-support and recommends retirement. Its remaining wired, wireless and local-storage functions can help an existing owner understand the device, but they do not supply an ongoing security-maintenance commitment.

The review
NETGEAR R6900P: useful legacy functions, consequential support limits
What the connection ratings tell you
The advertised AC1900 class totals 1900 Mbps across two radio bands. It is not the speed one device will necessarily receive. MU-MIMO is listed for simultaneous multi-device streaming, but a controlled capacity result was not verified. The three external antennas and dual-core processor are hardware descriptors; they do not fill the gaps in measured range, sustained performance or thermal reliability. [6]
The retained supplier evidence lists four Ethernet device connections rated at 1 Gbps and one USB 3.0 port. The Ethernet rating is a nominal link capability, not measured file-transfer or Internet throughput. The research does not establish a current-firmware WAN benchmark or a defensible power-efficiency result, so those should not be used to justify a purchase. [8], [6]
AP and VPN modes have distinct limits
NETGEAR documents using R6900P in AP mode behind an existing gateway. That mode disables guest networking, website blocking, VPN Service and Remote Management. It can change the device's network role, but it does not extend security support. Managed mesh interoperability is unverified, so do not assume that AP mode makes this router a compatible mesh satellite. [2], [7]
The documented VPN function provides remote access to the home network using OpenVPN clients. NETGEAR's instructions require a reachable router through Dynamic DNS or the stated public-address setup. Check the required client and Internet addressing before relying on it; the VPN label does not establish compatibility with every commercial VPN service. The EoS status still governs a present-day deployment decision. [2], [1]
Separate local features from retired services
ReadyCLOUD remote file access for WiFi routers ended on April 4, 2023. Installing older firmware cannot bring back the shut-down service. NETGEAR says a router-connected USB drive can still be accessed from the home network, which is useful context for an existing owner, but drive formats, current operating systems and backup applications need their own compatibility check. [8], [4]
Anywhere Access is a separate app-management function tied to NETGEAR cloud services and an SSO account; NETGEAR documents both two-factor authentication and disabling it. Circle Go and its supporting services ended on December 31, 2020. That notice explicitly says the regular Circle subscription was not affected by that change, so it should not be read as a blanket retirement of all Circle router controls or a guarantee of today's plan availability. [9], [5]
Start with the support status
This assessment concerns NETGEAR R6900P-100NAS. The supplied hardware revision and firmware remain unverified. The decisive buying limitation is current support: NETGEAR's June 2026 advisory identifies R6900P as EoS, says no security updates are planned for marked devices and recommends retirement. Choose currently supported equipment for a new primary Internet connection. [8], [2]
A historical fix is not an assurance of continuing maintenance. HDW's 2022 security disclosure lists R6900P as fixed in firmware 1.3.3.154 for its specific aws_json issue. The demonstrated device in that research was R7000P. This supports the stated remediation history, not R6900P speed results, a latest-firmware claim or a clean bill of health for every later issue. [2], [3]
Buyer questions
Before you buy
Should I buy an R6900P for a new home network?
Choose a currently supported alternative. NETGEAR marks R6900P end-of-support and recommends retirement; historical features do not establish ongoing security maintenance. [2]
Compatibility
Which client works with the documented VPN service?
NETGEAR specifies OpenVPN clients and a router reachable through its documented Dynamic DNS or public-address setup. Do not infer arbitrary commercial VPN compatibility from that remote-access feature. [1]
Setup
Everyday use
Did ReadyCLOUD retirement stop local USB file sharing?
NETGEAR says local home-network access remains available. ReadyCLOUD remote access ended on April 4, 2023 and cannot be restored with older router firmware. Specific drive and operating-system compatibility remains unverified here. [4]
Limitations
Does AC1900 mean my device gets 1900 Mbps?
No. It is the combined advertised radio classification across two bands. No verified current-firmware throughput result establishes that speed for one device or your Internet connection. [6]
Does the Circle Go notice mean all Circle controls ended?
No. The notice retires Circle Go and its supporting services on December 31, 2020, and explicitly says the regular Circle subscription was not affected by that change. This is not confirmation of every plan's current availability. [5]

KnowSpec analysis
Plan a supported replacement
The R6900P is difficult to recommend as a new primary Internet router. NETGEAR marks it end-of-support and recommends retirement. Its remaining wired, wireless and local-storage functions can help an existing owner understand the device, but they do not supply an ongoing security-maintenance commitment.
Method: Separate nominal specifications from the measured-performance gaps recorded in the evidence.Treat the speed class as a specification
AC1900 combines advertised radio rates across two bands. The Ethernet device ports and MU-MIMO feature describe connection options, not a verified promise for a particular broadband plan, room or number of active clients. This research does not establish current-firmware throughput, sustained load, coverage or power-efficiency performance.
Method: Prioritize the current manufacturer lifecycle advisory over historical feature descriptions.Choose the function you actually need
Local USB file access and the retired ReadyCLOUD service are different capabilities. AP mode also changes the feature set: VPN Service, guest networking and other routing functions are disabled. An owner should identify whether the requirement is local storage, network extension or remote access before relying on an old feature list.
Method: Compare manufacturer service-retirement and operating-mode guidance for this model.Visible information gaps
