GL.iNet Spitz AX GL-X3000 5G Dual-SIM Wi-Fi 6 Cellular Router
Spitz AX suits buyers who need cellular service, Ethernet and Wi-Fi in one configurable router, provided their carrier permits the chosen SIM plan. Treat dual-SIM as backup switching, allow interruptions, and check the official bootloader remediation before relying on the device. It requires external power, and neither the radio label nor its VPN ratings establish the speed at your location.

GL.iNet Spitz AX GL-X3000: flexible cellular routing with setup obligations
What the field tests establish
Calyx tested its Sprout BYOD SIM across locations and days with OONI/M-Lab tools, reporting favorable operation and usability for Spitz AX. In contrast, teltarif's June 2024 indoor o2 test had weak reception: its Spitz AX/M6 Pro group averaged 50–60 Mbps and dipped to 10 Mbps, without a continuous 5G connection. These results describe specific cellular conditions; firmware details were incomplete and neither report establishes your Wi-Fi throughput. [5], [3]
OpenVPN and WireGuard client/server functions and policy routing are documented. The respective 150 Mbps and 300 Mbps figures are manufacturer maxima. Likewise, the below-14 W consumption figure is a specification rather than an independent efficiency measurement. Current-firmware sustained-load, thermal, coverage and multi-client results remain gaps in the accepted evidence. [4]
Understand the wired and wireless paths
The documented 5G configuration combines a Qualcomm X62 modem with dual-band Wi-Fi 6. Manufacturer link-rate ceilings are 574 Mbps and 2402 Mbps for the two bands; these are radio specifications, not measured internet throughput. Six detachable antennas and external DC power make placement and installation part of the purchase decision. [4], [6]
There is a 2.5 Gbps WAN port and a 1 Gbps LAN port, plus USB 2.0 Type-A and microSD/TF. A device on the dedicated LAN connection remains constrained by that port even when the upstream connection is faster. Confirm that this modest wired-port count fits the intended setup. [4]
Dual-SIM backup needs a realistic setup plan
Two SIM slots share single-standby operation. The v4.8–v4.9 guide documents automatic switching, but the router must first detect failure and activate the other SIM. Plan for an interruption rather than assuming a call survives the change. Multi-WAN and load balancing across connection types do not turn the two SIMs into simultaneous carrier bonding. [4], [1]
Use an activated, carrier-permitted data plan and the correct APN, and insert the SIM with power off. Check the exact modem-region variant and power plug before purchase; the ASIN identity alone did not resolve them. The router needs a suitable DC supply and antenna clearance. These requirements favor a prepared home or RV installation over a self-contained pocket hotspot. [7], [4], [1], [6]
Check the bootloader notice before relying on it
GL.iNet's March 26, 2025 notice describes startup and U-Boot recovery failures with a possible service-life impact. It requires both bootloader and firmware remediation; the GL-X3000 section names U-Boot 2025-02-25 19:05:24 and firmware 4.7.4. Follow the linked official model-specific instructions. A firmware update alone does not prove that the bootloader requirement was met, and the evidence does not show that every current shipment is affected. [2]
The notice offers then-current owners an extra warranty year and replacement support if the problem persists after remediation; confirm individual eligibility with GL.iNet. The older OpenWrt baseline in the datasheet is not proof of today's installed firmware. No support-end date, broad security assurance, measured mesh capability or validated parental-control behavior is established by this research. [4], [2]

Limitations
Can both SIMs work at the same time?
No. The documented design keeps one SIM active at a time. Automatic switching is available, but failure detection and activation create an interruption. [1]
Care and maintenance
What should I check when buying a used unit?
Ask whether the official GL-X3000 bootloader and firmware remediation has been completed. The manufacturer's notice makes clear that firmware alone is insufficient. Confirm support eligibility and the actual unit's status rather than assuming all stock has the same history. [2]

Other facts
| Specification | Value | Source |

| Buyer Fit | Calyx found Spitz AX worked with its Sprout BYOD SIM and rated its user experience and speed favorably among four devices. Testing used OONI/M-Lab tools over multiple locations and days; location, network conditions and future carrier changes limit transferability. US | [5] |
| Limitation | GL-X3000 uses Dual SIM, Single Standby: two SIMs can be installed, but only one is active at a time. This is not simultaneous two-carrier bonding.; The v4.8–v4.9 manual documents automatic SIM switching, but it is not immediate: failure detection and activation of the other SIM take time. Uninterrupted calls or instant failover are not established. | [1] |
| Risk | GL.iNet's March 26, 2025 notice describes startup/U-Boot recovery failures and a possible service-life impact. It requires both bootloader and firmware remediation; the GL-X3000 section names U-Boot 2025-02-25 19:05:24 and firmware 4.7.4. It does not establish that every current shipment is affected. | [2] |
| Setup Requirement | Manufacturer operating range is 0–40 °C; use an appropriate external DC supply and allow space for six detachable antennas.; Use an activated SIM with a valid data plan, verify the carrier's restrictions and required APN, and insert the SIM with the router powered off. Supported radio bands alone do not establish plan eligibility. | [4], [1] |

A configurable cellular gateway for a powered installation
Spitz AX suits buyers who need cellular service, Ethernet and Wi-Fi in one configurable router, provided their carrier permits the chosen SIM plan. Treat dual-SIM as backup switching, allow interruptions, and check the official bootloader remediation before relying on the device. It requires external power, and neither the radio label nor its VPN ratings establish the speed at your location.
Method: Synthesis of accepted manufacturer documentation and qualified original field tests.Field conditions matter more than the headline rate
Calyx's favorable multi-location experience and teltarif's weak-signal result concern different networks and methods. They justify testing the intended carrier at the installation site, not a universal speed promise. Accepted evidence lacks reproducible current-firmware Wi-Fi, sustained-load and VPN benchmarks.
