Sennheiser HD 490 PRO Professional Reference Open-Back Studio Headphones
Choose the standard HD 490 PRO if you want an open studio headphone with two useful pad tunings and replaceable wear parts. Try both pads before committing: independent listeners differ on treble and comfort. Check your source's headroom and the exact accessory package, and do not buy on the assumption that the original software bundle remains included.

The review
Sennheiser HD 490 PRO: choose the pads, check the package
Two pad tunings, with real differences and differing verdicts
The velour Producing pads lean warmer; the fabric Mixing pads aim at a flatter reference. Pragmatic Audio measured its sample with a KB501X soft pinna, a 711 coupler and REW, finding stronger bass and a more recessed upper midrange with Producing pads. Sonarworks measured three pairs, reporting close bass matching and only modest high-mid differences. Its distortion assessment was also positive, but its strongest recommendation assumes SoundID calibration, which it sells. Headphones.com's listener preferred Mixing pads yet still objected to lower-treble emphasis with either set. Treat these as different perspectives and test conditions, not a unanimous promise of neutrality. For mixing, audition familiar material with both sets, settle on a reference configuration and check whether the treble encourages misleading tonal decisions. [5], [1], [3], [2]
Comfort, service parts and what the standard box actually includes
The headphone is specified at 260 g without cable. Pragmatic Audio liked the metal/plastic construction, but Headphones.com's reviewer reported ear contact with Mixing pads, extra warmth with Producing pads and headband pressure during extended use. Comfort therefore deserves a personal trial rather than a universal verdict. The standard 700286 package includes both pad sets and a 1.8 m cable. The Plus package adds a longer cable, case and spare fabric headband pad; its accessories must not be assumed to accompany this ASIN. The official service catalog lists replacement cables and pad sets, though regional stock and future supply are not guaranteed. Finally, Sennheiser Japan's correction says dearVR MIX-SE bundling ended for headquarters shipments from May 1, 2025. Older reviews describe the original offer, so verify actual box contents instead of assigning continuing software value. [5], [4], [6], [3], [2]
Drive and environment matter more than the impedance label
Sennheiser specifies 130 ohm nominal impedance and 96 dB/mW sensitivity. Those are useful amplifier-selection inputs, not proof that every laptop or dongle has equal headroom. Sonarworks found laptop drive usable; Pragmatic Audio reached roughly 90% volume on an Apple USB-C dongle and preferred a FiiO KA11 for reserve. Check your own output at your normal level before deciding whether another amplifier is useful. The detachable analog cable can connect to either earcup through mini-XLR, helping desk routing. Open-back construction is a poor match when isolation or keeping playback away from a nearby microphone is essential; that is a design-based application judgement because numerical leakage results were not verified here. Manufacturer maximum-output and single-frequency distortion ratings should not be read as recommended listening levels or full-band guarantees. [5], [2], [1]

Measured performance
Reported high mid channel difference ceiling
2 dBSonarworks published channel-balance measurements · n=3 · Reported upper bound across three measured pairs, with closely matched bass. This is sample evidence, not a tolerance specification; the article does not fully describe the fixture.
Source [1]Buyer questions
Before you buy
Should I assume dearVR MIX-SE is still bundled?
No. Sennheiser Japan states that bundling ended for headquarters shipments from May 1, 2025. Confirm the actual package rather than relying on launch-era reviews. [6]
Compatibility
Everyday use
Limitations
Is it suited to noisy rooms or microphone tracking?
Its open-back design makes it a poor choice when isolation or preventing microphone bleed is essential. No numerical attenuation or leakage result was verified in this evidence set. [5]
Compared with others
Does standard PRO include the Plus carrying case?
No. Standard PRO has both pad sets and the short cable. Plus adds a case, longer cable and spare fabric headband pad; the balanced cable is optional. [5]

Other facts

| Limitation | An open-back design is a poor choice when room-noise isolation or keeping playback out of nearby microphones is essential. This is an application inference; no numerical isolation or leakage result was verified in the accepted evidence.; Headphones.com's reviewer preferred Mixing pads but heard objectionable lower-treble emphasis around 4 and 6 kHz with both sets. This is an attributed listening criticism, not unanimous lab agreement. | [3], [5] |
| Setup Requirement | Sonarworks found laptop sound-card drive usable, while warning that considerable headroom can require more output. The source voltage capability matters alongside nominal impedance. | [1] |
| Use Case | Sennheiser positions velour Producing pads for warmer sound and fabric Mixing pads for a flatter reference. Both sets are washable. | [5] |
